BYD has proudly introduced the Sealion 05 EV, marking its eighth all-electric SUV and setting a new standard in the market. Built on an innovative technology platform, the Sealion 05 is available in two distinct versions, both equipped with BYD’s cutting-edge God’s Eye C ADAS system as a standard feature.
This latest addition positions itself as the entry-level all-electric model within the impressive Sealion lineup. With rear-wheel drive capabilities, it delivers an exhilarating performance of up to 214 horsepower and boasts an impressive claimed range of 520 kilometers.
BYD Sealion 05 EV: Design and Key Highlights

BYD has introduced the Sealion 05 EV, showcasing a distinct design from its plug-in hybrid counterpart despite sharing the name. At the front, the all-electric SUV features a connected LED headlamp design similar to the Atto 3. The front bumper houses integrated cameras and sensors, along with a wide air intake, silver skid plate, and vertically positioned air vents on both sides, adding to its aggressive stance.
On the sides, bold plastic cladding with body-coloured accents and a strong downward crease enhance the SUV’s muscular look. The alloy wheels sport a dual-tone black and silver finish. A partially blacked-out D-pillar creates a floating roof effect, while the rear features a smoked-out LED light bar, an illuminated BYD logo, and a sleek roof spoiler for a modern, aerodynamic appearance.
The Sealion 05 EV measures 4,520mm in length, 1,860mm in width, and 1,630mm in height. Though slightly more compact overall than the PHEV version, it boasts a longer wheelbase of 2,720mm—8mm more than the hybrid variant. The e-SUV is available in two weight options—1,780kg and 1,670kg—depending on the battery capacity.
Equipped with a rear-wheel-drive, single-motor setup, the Sealion 05 EV promises a smooth driving experience and claims to offer a class-leading turning radius. Buyers can choose between two battery packs—50kWh and 60.9kWh. The 60.9kWh variant generates 214hp and delivers a claimed range of up to 520km. Meanwhile, the 50kWh version produces 188hp and offers a range of 430km on a single charge. Both variants come with an electronically limited top speed of 180kph.
Launch Timeline and Availability

BYD has scheduled the official launch of the Sealion 05 EV for March 25 in China. However, the company has not yet confirmed plans for its debut in the Indian market. Last year, BYD hinted at developing an EV competitor for the Hyundai Creta in the ₹20 lakh price bracket, though the Atto 2 seems to be a more likely candidate for India than the Sealion 05 EV.
The Sealion 05 sounds like it’s aiming to provide the best of both worlds—affordable EVs with decent range and performance. The 520 km range really stands out, and I’m curious how it’ll impact the entry-level EV market, especially in India.
