Maruti e-Vitara to Get India-Made Front e-Axle; Launch Soon with 500km Range

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch its first all-electric SUV—the e-Vitara—and it’s bringing with it an exciting “Made in India” innovation. The upcoming e-SUV will debut with a locally developed front e-axle, a compact yet powerful unit set to define the brand’s electric future.

The e-Vitara will feature an advanced eAxle system, jointly developed by BluE Nexus, a consortium that includes Toyota, Aisin, and DENSO. This all-in-one module integrates the motor, inverter, and transaxle into a compact setup—similar to electric systems used by global giants like Tesla, BMW, and Hyundai’s E-GMP platform.

The eAxle has been optimized for India with a front-mounted layout that saves space while offering high power density.

For its India debut, the Maruti e-Vitara will be offered as a front-wheel drive (FWD) model. The front motor’s power output will range between 144hp (106kW) and 174hp (128kW)—more than enough to deliver a strong electric punch on Indian roads.

An all-wheel drive (AWD) variant is in the pipeline, likely to arrive after Toyota rolls out its own version of this SUV. That version will feature a rear eAxle rated at 108hp (80kW), designed with a reduced height to free up rear-seat and luggage space.

The e-Vitara will launch with a 61kWh battery pack, targeting a certified range of approximately 500km (ARAI). To support this, the compact eAxle system uses dual-sided cooling for the inverter and high-efficiency magnets, ensuring greater thermal efficiency and lightweight construction.

Additionally, the inverter is built directly into the axle housing, reducing weight and eliminating the need for extra components. This also allows shorter, lighter drive shafts—another thoughtful touch to improve performance and efficiency.

What’s Next?

Maruti’s electric SUV ambitions are clearly accelerating, and the e-Vitara stands as a strong step forward in the brand’s EV roadmap. While the FWD version launches first, the future looks set for an AWD version to follow, possibly led by Toyota’s Urban Cruiser EV. With local manufacturing, a powerful motor, and a solid 500km range, the Maruti e-Vitara is shaping up to be a compelling and practical EV choice for Indian consumers.
