Maruti Jimny Exports Triple Its India Sales: A Surprising Shift in Demand

Since its launch, the Maruti Jimny has achieved a significant milestone, with domestic wholesales and exports surpassing an impressive 1 lakh units. Just two years after entering the Indian market, this five-door vehicle has proven to be a strong contender, amassing total sales of 102,024 units from June 2023 to the end of April. According to SIAM’s wholesale data, this includes 26,180 units sold domestically and an astounding 75,844 units exported globally.

Notably, domestic sales represent a solid 26 percent of all dispatched vehicles, while exports dominate with a remarkable 74 percent share. This showcases not only the demand for the Maruti Jimny in India but also its appeal in international markets.

By the end of April 2025, it’s clear that the sales landscape has shifted dramatically. Sales in FY2025 plummeted nearly 50% compared to FY2024. Despite its strong launch at Auto Expo 2023, where the Maruti Jimny attracted over 30,000 bookings within just five months, this initial excitement didn’t convert into actual purchases domestically. Domestic wholesales took a significant hit with a staggering 49% drop in FY2025; however, there was a glimmer of hope with April 2025 reporting an impressive 60% increase, with sales hitting 431 units.

On a brighter note, the export figures for the Maruti Jimny stand robust at 75,844 units. Since launching the five-door SUV in India just five months prior to October 2023, Maruti began exporting to key markets like Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. The response from countries such as Mexico, Australia, and South Africa has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s also worth noting that since November 2020, Maruti Suzuki has been exclusively producing three-door models for export markets across both left- and right-hand-drive regions in Africa and the Middle East from its Gurgaon plant in Haryana. This strategic move showcases their commitment to expanding internationally while adapting to shifting domestic trends.

The export journey of the made-in-India Jimny 5-Door took a significant leap forward on January 30, 2025, when Suzuki Motor Corp introduced the model in Japan, branding it as the ‘Nomade’ ahead of its official launch set for April 3. This milestone is pivotal for Maruti, marking the Jimny 5-Door as only the second SUV to be shipped to Suzuki’s home market after the Maruti Fronx in FY20225.

The response from Japanese customers has been overwhelming. Just four days after bookings opened, there were over 50,000 pre-orders! The demand was so high that Suzuki had no choice but to temporarily pause bookings for this impressive made-in-India vehicle. This clearly demonstrates not just a strong market interest but also highlights India’s capability in producing vehicles that resonate with customers globally.

With a price range of Rs 12.76 lakh to Rs 14.81 lakh, the Jimny stands out in the market thanks to its powerful 105 hp, 134 Nm, 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. It offers flexibility with your choice of either a smooth-shifting 5-speed manual or a convenient 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission. While many of Maruti’s offerings in India have upgraded to the latest K15C engine, the Jimny still relies on the reliable K15B engine that has proven its worth over time.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, Maruti Suzuki boasts impressive numbers: around 16.94 kmpl for the manual variant and an ARAI-rated mileage of approximately 16.39 kmpl for the automatic version. Though the Jimny doesn’t have direct competitors in its class, it goes head-to-head with tough contenders like the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha, making it an exciting option for those seeking adventure without sacrificing performance or practicality.
