Mercedes GLB Bids Adieu to India: Discontinued Quietly

The Mercedes GLB SUV has officially been discontinued in India, as confirmed by the German manufacturer. This sought-after 7-seat SUV was imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) from Mexico, and all available units for the Indian market have now been sold out. Initially priced at Rs 63.80 lakh, the GLB offered exceptional value and features.

But here’s the good news: a facelifted version of the GLB has already been unveiled internationally, which means there’s a new model on the horizon for India.

The Mercedes GLB was launched in December 2022 with a price range of Rs 63.80 lakh to Rs 69.80 lakh, establishing itself as the most affordable 7-seat luxury SUV on the market at that time. Although it didn’t become a top seller, Mercedes remained optimistic about its performance. Remarkably, the GLB undercut competitors like the Land Rover Discovery Sport by an impressive Rs 1.6 to 7.6 lakh.

This entry-level SUV is available in both petrol and diesel variants, catering to different preferences and needs. The options include the GLB 200 Progressive with a powerful yet efficient 163 hp turbo-petrol engine, along with two diesel variants: the GLB 220d 4Matic and the sporty AMG Line version of the same model. The petrol variant features a responsive 1.3-litre turbocharged engine coupled with a smooth-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission driving just the front wheels.

On the other hand, for those who crave robust performance, both diesel variants boast a potent 190 hp engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that distributes power across all four wheels for enhanced traction and control.

Furthermore, don’t forget about its electric counterpart—the Mercedes EQB—which also deserves your attention if you’re considering eco-friendly luxury vehicles.

The GLB has undergone a significant mid-cycle refresh as of March 2023, featuring essential design changes like updated bumpers and a new front grille that enhance its exterior appeal. Inside the cabin, improvements in both design and functionality elevate the driving experience. Among these updates, the most important is undoubtedly the introduction of advanced 48V mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, which offer improved efficiency without compromising performance. While these exciting updates are now available in various markets, it’s crucial to note that the GLB facelift has yet to arrive in India.

New-gen GLB reveal expected in 2026

India is set for an exciting launch with the arrival of the third-generation Mercedes CLA. While Mercedes-Benz has assured us that a new GLB is in the works for India, there’s some ambiguity about whether they’re referring to a facelift or the all-new model that’s still being developed. Recent spy shots of the second-gen GLB undergoing testing have appeared online, and it’s anticipated to make its debut in 2026. This model will share its foundation with the upcoming third-gen CLA, which we expect to see hitting Indian roads by year-end.

  1. Given the GLB was a CBU, I’m not surprised it was phased out quietly—pricing always made it a bit niche. Still, fans of the model will be looking forward to the facelift.
